This FanDuel Wizards Bet is a Winner Unless Washington Suffers its Worst Loss Ever

Written By Dann Stupp on February 12, 2021

Thanks to FanDuel and its latest “Spread the Love” promotion, Sunday’s Washington Wizards vs. Boston Celtics game is a can’t-miss affair.

It could also be a profitable one for sports bettors. At the very least, it’s about as close as you can get to a guaranteed winner.

FanDuel officials recently announced that Sunday’s Washington Wizards vs. Boston Celtics game is the focus of a “Spread the Love” promotion. Considering it’s Valentine’s Day, the timing couldn’t be better.

The sportsbook’s popular “Love” promotion is exclusively for Virginia customers. In fact, the more VA sports bettors who take part, the better the odds are for everyone.

Spread the love with improved Wizards Odds

In a nutshell, for everyone 500 bettors who wager in the “Virginia Spread the Love Market” on FanDuel, the betting line improves one point in the Wizards’ favor.

Heading into Sunday’s game at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC (1 p.m., NBA TV), the spread was Washington +6.5. In other words, in a normal situation, the Wizards (6-16) would be 6.5-point underdogs to the Celtics (13-11).

However, with the “Spread the Love” promotion, Wizards bettors can get an even better line.

Here’s how it works:

  • For every 500 bets placed, FanDuel will move the spread exactly one point in the Wizards’ favor.
  • As of Friday at 1 p.m., the line was Washington +56.5.
  • The max bet is $50, and the odds are -110 for the wager.

The line will keep moving until game time, so expect even better odds of a Wizards win by tip-off.

Is ‘Spread the Love’ a guaranteed winner?

Of course, there is no sure thing in sports or sports betting. After all, the gambling gods have a way of ruining even your surest bets.

However, those dribbling deities would have to engineer an upset of historic proportions to ruin Sunday’s promotion.

If no other bettors wager on the game, the “Spread the Love” line for Washington-Boston would hold steady at 56.5. And even at that spread, the Wizards would have to suffer its biggest defeat in franchise history not to cover.

The most lopsided defeat in Washington’s 59-year history came in 1971. That’s when the Wizards (who at the time were the Baltimore Bullets) suffered a 52-point loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Here are the five worst losses in Wizards history. As you’ll note, none of them came in a home game:

  • 52 points (151-99): on Jan. 10, 1971, at Milwaukee Bucks
  • 47 (116-69): Dec. 4, 2017, at Utah Jazz
  • 46 (153-107): Nov. 27, 1970, at Boston Celtics
  • 45 (124-79): Jan. 9, 1993, at New Jersey Nets
  • 45 (132-87): Oct. 13, 1973, at Portland Trail Blazers

So, heading into Sunday’s “Spread the Love” promotion, bettors have to like their chances.
