Breeders’ Cup History
Here’s a look at five of the greatest moments in Breeders’ Cup history:
- 1984: Wild Again came in at 31:1 to win the first-ever Breeders’ Cup Classic at the inaugural Breeders’ Cup series.
- 2001: 2000 American Horse of the Year Tiznow won back-to-back Breeders’ Cup Classic races.
- 2010: Goldikova became the first-ever three-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, having won it in 2008 and 2009.

Breeders’ Cup Classic Records
The Breeders’ Cup Classic is widely considered the World Championship race for three-year-old thoroughbreds.
The race is run on dirt at a distance of 1 1⁄4 miles. It is the highest-profile race outside of the Triple Crown and offers a purse larger than the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes combined.
Ghostzapper posted the fastest Breeders’ Cup Classic time in history, running a 1:59:02 at Lone Star Park in 2004.
However, American Pharoah’s 2:00.07 set a track record at Keeneland in the 2015 Classic. Plus, American Pharoah holds the record for the largest winning margin in the race, winning that one by 6.5 lengths.
American Pharoah’s win also helped Bob Baffert set the record for most wins by a trainer. Baffert-trained horses won the Breeders’ Cup Classic three years in a row from 2014 (Bayern) through 2016 (Arrogate). Baffert added a fourth win in 2020 with Authentic’s victory at Keeneland.
