September 2021 sports betting

The sportsbook market in Washington, DC received a glimmer of hope with the September 2021 sports betting figures.

DC sportsbook operators experienced an increase in business last month due to the resurgence of NFL and NCAA college football.

Washington, DC’s sports betting witnessed an astounding 66.4% surge from August to September, marking a significant month-over-month growth.

A rebound with September 2021 sports betting

In total, the three sportsbooks in the capital of the nation gathered a sum of $20,706,482.68 from 293,918 wagers.

The average bet size amounts to $70.45.

In total, this represents a growth of 66% compared to the $12.4 million wagered by DC sports bettors in August.

Surprisingly, DC sports-betting operators once again achieved a significant hold, with Caesars by William Hill leading the way with a 20% hold (experiencing a staggering 78.6% increase from the previous month). In total, all operators collectively maintained an 18.8% hold.

Here’s the full breakdown:

Hooray for football season

Sportsbooks are well aware that the summer months tend to be sluggish. Due to a decrease in sports events and an abundance of alternative entertainment options during this season, bettors usually take a break and decrease their activity.

The arrival of late August and early September signals the comeback of football, the highly favored sport when it comes to betting. This fact was clearly demonstrated in DC.

In September, Caesars by WH Sportsbook saw a significant surge in wagers, with an increase from $10.1 million to $16.2 million, marking a 60% rise. This retail sportsbook is situated in Capital One Arena and has the additional capability to operate an online sportsbook within a two-block radius of the venue. On the other hand, BetMGM, which operates similarly at Nationals Park, experienced a more modest growth of just $90,597, equivalent to 12.1%. It is worth noting that the setup for Virginia sportsbook users differs significantly, as Caesars and BetMGM can operate entirely online and cover the entire commonwealth in Virginia.

In September, GambetDC, the dominant online wagering app supported by the DC Lottery, experienced a significant boost in its handle. The app witnessed a remarkable 127% increase as it collected $3.7 million in wagers, compared to the $1.6 million recorded in August. This improvement came as a much-needed relief for GambetDC.

Virginia’s sports betting market is thriving, and Maryland sportsbooks are expected to launch soon. In comparison, Washington DC faces a challenging task. However, there is some good news as September shows positive progress.
